This Naltrexone Diet Study
Today, July 10th of 2009, is the first day of my Naltrexone diet experiment. I have arrived at the decision to try Naltrexone as a diet aid after a significant amount of online research and many conversations with my doctor. It is my hope that Naltrexone will stop the constant, irresistible urge to consume carbohydrates.
Naltrexone is a drug that was accidentally discovered to be useful in controlling eating disorders. However, Naltrexone has never been approved by the FDA for this use. The drug was originally developed as an aid to help people overcome opiate addiction and alcoholism. It was by chance that doctors observed its benefits in working with cases of obsessive compulsive disorder, which (my doctor) and I believe is a major contributing factor in my obesity.
The decision to try Naltrexone is not one I take lightly. I understand my use of the drug has not been widely studied. I also understand that there is no guarantee as to the safety of using Naltrexone in this manner. Still, I plan to give it a try as a sort of last ditch effort in my fight against obesity.
The goals for my personal study are as follows:
1. Document physical effects of Naltrexone as I experience them.
2. Document my ability to conform to low carbohydrate dieting while taking Naltrexone.
3. Document any fluxuation in weight while taking Naltrexone.
4. Document the effectiveness of Naltrexone over time
I will use this blog to report my progress and findings.
In addition to taking Naltrexone, I will be attempting lifestyle modifications such as increased exercise and diet change. To be clear, I do not believe, nor am I trying to prove, that Naltrexone alone will result in weightloss. I want to know if Naltrexone’s positive impact on obsessive compulsive disorder will help facilitate the lifestyle modifications that will result in weightloss.
Caution: Naltrexone is not approved by the FDA as a diet aid. There is no guarantee of safety offered by the manufacturer, the FDA, this blog, or me. I do not recommend anyone attempt to this diet on his or her own. If you are interested in trying Naltrexone for yourself, please speak to your doctor about it. Only proceed with medical supervision. Even I have the supervision of my doctor.
